Argostoli – Ancient “Krani” – Cyclopean Walls
Explore hidden, ancient ruins
Description:
We start our hike at De Bosset bridge*. We walk along the banks of Koutavos lagoon towards the bottom of the hill where ancient Krani is located. We follow a well-formed, uphill path through alternating landscape. Just before we reach the walls of the ancient city we have the chance to admire spectacular views of Argostoli. We reach the west side of the imposing Cyclopean walls built in the Mycenaean era with huge stones placed with mastery, preserved for over 2600 years. We walk among the ruins of the Doric temple of Demeter and we then follow a dirt road through olive groves. At the aqueduct we enter a shady, wooded path that leads us to the back of the ancient city. While climbing among the ruins , we have the chance to see buildings of different periods well hidden in the forest. Our hike ends at the lagoon of Koutavos.
*Alternatively, we can start our hike at the stadium of the town.
