KEFALONIA TREKKING
SAMI TREKKING KEFALONIA
“Saristra” – “Agia Dinati” peak – Themata Monastery
Explore peaks, monasteries and old villages of Kefalonia
Description:
We start our hike from the “old Vlachata Sami” village. We take a gentle, uphill path through a shady gorge. Caves and rocks carved from water harmoniously coexist with the natural surroundings. If we get lucky, we might even see deer. We traverse through a path and then we do canyoning without ropes through a demanding gorge towards the peak of “Agia Dinati” which is at an elevation of 1136m. We stop to rest and have some snacks while enjoying magnificent views of Argostoli, Zakynthos, Ithaca and Sami. After taking a gentle, downhill path we arrive at the Monastery of Themata, one of the oldest monuments of Kefalonia, dating back to 1096.
According to local tradition, the holy icon of Virgin Mary miraculously heals sick people. After exploring the monastery me continue our hike in an area where we usually see calves, goats and sheep in their natural environment. Our hike comes to an end after arriving in Old Vlahata Village, a ghost village abandoned after the 1953 earthquake. “Saristra”, an alternative, three-day art and music festival takes place here in the Summer
